“VIHFA CELEBRATES HOMEOWNERSHIP MONTH AND HOSTS THE 5th ANNUAL HOUSING EXPO”

St. Thomas, VI------Governor Kenneth E Mapp has declared June as National Homeownership Month in the Territory. As the Virgin Islands Housing Finance Authority (VIHFA) marks 31 years of providing affordable housing in the Territory, it is once again gearing up to host the 2015 Housing Exposition. This amazing event has gained momentum over the last four years and established as a transcendent affair.  The 2015 Expo promises to be the best yet. The Expo will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at the Sunshine Mall on St. Croix, and on Saturday, June 27, 2015, at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Arena on St. Thomas.  Both events are scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Building Stronger Communities.”  In adhering to the theme, lending institutions, housing management/leasing organizations, construction contractors and product vendors, insurance companies, landscaping contractors, and utility providers will be on site to provide valuable information to attendees. The Authority’s goal is to arm homeowners and future homeowners with the skills to acquire, enhance, and maintain not only their home, but also the communities in which they work and reside.

Onsite information on current VIHFA housing community developments will be available to attendees.  The developments on St. Croix are in Estates Bonne Esperance, Cotton Valley, Mt. Pleasant (West) and Work & Rest, which is solely designated for veterans.  The developments on St. Thomas are Whispering Hills, and in Estates Fortuna and Nazareth.  In preparing attendees for homeownership in these developments, associates of VIHFA will be facilitating financial management and other homeownership-related workshops.

In addition, the Authority has enlisted the assistance of over 40 vendors and departments to include the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority.  WAPA will provide a workshop on its newly introduced system, the “Automated Metering Infrastructure” system, which lays the groundwork for smart grids to reduce meter tampering and allows for expedited access to consumption data.  Other featured presentations include “How to…” workshops, to include a “Kids Workshop” by Home Depot, “As Good As 100%” by Banco Popular, and the début of a “Design on a Dime” workshop.

There will be giveaways to include a flat screen 40-inch TV, three thousand gallons of water, gift cards, and much more. Attendees are encouraged to visit the VIHFA website at www.vihfa.gov for schedule information.
